Overview
wunderBudget connects to your bank accounts to automatically import and categorize transactions. To provide this service, wunderBudget uses Plaid to access your financial data and AWS to securely process and store it. This policy explains what data is collected, how it is used, and the controls you have over it.
Information We Collect
When you use wunderBudget, we collect the following information:
- Account information: Your email address, used to create and authenticate your wunderBudget account via Amazon Cognito. Your email is stored exclusively within Cognito (encrypted at rest) and is never written to our application database — it is used solely for account verification, password resets, and two-factor authentication.
- Bank account data: Account names, account types, and last-four digits of account numbers, provided by Plaid when you connect a financial institution.
- Transaction data: Transaction dates, amounts, merchant names, and categories from your connected bank accounts, covering up to 90 days of history.
- Budgeting data: Budget amounts, categories, merchant rules, and savings goals you create within the app, stored in your account on AWS.
How We Use Your Information
We use your information solely to provide the wunderBudget service:
- To display your transactions and account balances within the app
- To automatically categorize transactions using AI (Claude, by Anthropic)
- To generate budget summaries and spending reports
- To authenticate your account and keep your data secure
We do not use your financial data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than providing the budgeting service you have requested.
Plaid
wunderBudget uses Plaid Technologies, Inc. to connect to your financial institutions. When you link a bank account, Plaid presents its own consent screen explaining exactly what data wunderBudget is requesting before any access is granted. You must explicitly approve this access before Plaid shares any data with wunderBudget.
Plaid maintains a secure cache of your financial data to provide reliable access to your transaction history. This cached data is subject to Plaid's own retention and deletion policies, which are described in Plaid's Consumer Privacy Policy.
You can view and manage all apps connected to your financial accounts, including wunderBudget, at my.plaid.com. You have two ways to revoke wunderBudget's access to your financial data:
- Disconnect your bank account from within the wunderBudget app (Settings → bank account → Disconnect)
- Revoke access directly through Plaid's consumer portal at my.plaid.com
Either method will permanently terminate wunderBudget's ability to access your financial data through Plaid.
AWS Infrastructure
wunderBudget uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) to process and store your data securely. This includes:
- Amazon Cognito: Manages your account authentication. Your email address is stored exclusively in Cognito, encrypted at rest using AES-256. The rest of our systems identify you only by an opaque unique identifier (UUID) — your email is never passed to our application database or included in logs.
- AWS Lambda: Processes transaction data on your behalf
- Amazon DynamoDB: Stores your bank connection information, budgeting data, and transaction sync state. Records are keyed by your unique identifier — no email address is stored here.
- Amazon SES (Simple Email Service): Sends transactional emails on our behalf, including account verification codes and security notifications. Emails are sent from noreply@wunderbudget.com. We do not send marketing or promotional emails.
All data stored on AWS is encrypted at rest and in transit. Your data is stored in the United States.
Third-Party AI Processing
wunderBudget uses Chip, an AI assistant powered by Claude (made by Anthropic, PBC), to provide three features: automatic transaction categorization, the Ask Chip Insights experience, and in-app support. Before enabling these features, the app asks for your explicit consent and explains exactly what data is sent.
You can enable or disable AI features at any time in Settings → Privacy → AI Features. If you decline, all transactions are placed in the manual review queue and Chip features are disabled.
What data is sent to Anthropic, and for what purpose

Anthropic does not use API data to train its AI models. Data submitted to Claude via the API is not used to improve Anthropic's models. Your data is used solely to return a result for the feature you invoked and is not retained by Anthropic beyond the duration of the request. This is governed by Anthropic's Privacy Policy.
Data Retention
Your transaction data and account information are retained for as long as your wunderBudget account is active. If you disconnect a bank account, the associated access credentials are permanently removed from our systems.
If you delete the app without first using the Delete Account option in Settings, your account and associated data will be automatically and permanently deleted after 90 days of inactivity. To remove your data immediately, use Settings → Delete Account before removing the app.
You may also request deletion of all your data at any time by contacting us at privacy@wunderbudget.com.
Subscriptions
wunderBudget offers paid subscription plans managed through Apple's App Store. Subscription payments are processed by Apple and are subject to Apple's privacy policy. wunderBudget does not have access to your payment card information.
SMS and Mobile Messaging
wunderBudget may send SMS messages to your mobile phone number solely for account security purposes — specifically, one-time verification codes for two-factor authentication (2FA). By providing your phone number and opting in to SMS, you consent to receive these security messages.
- Purpose: Account security only. We do not send promotional or marketing SMS messages.
- Frequency: Messages are sent only when you initiate a login or security action requiring verification.
- Rates: Message and data rates may apply depending on your carrier plan.
- To opt out: Reply STOP to any message, or disable SMS two-factor authentication in Settings → Two-Factor Authentication.
- For help: Reply HELP to any message, or contact us at support@wunderbudget.com.
- No data sharing: Your mobile phone number and SMS opt-in data will not be shared with, sold to, or used by any third party or affiliate for any purpose whatsoever. Mobile opt-in information is used exclusively to deliver your requested security verification codes.
Analytics and Tracking
wunderBudget does not use any advertising SDKs, behavioral analytics frameworks, or cross-app tracking technologies. We do not share any data with data brokers or advertising networks.
Children's Privacy
wunderBudget is not directed at children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Your Rights
You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data at any time. You can disconnect your bank accounts and delete your budgeting data directly within the app. For account deletion or other data requests, contact us at privacy@wunderbudget.com.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you within the app. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
